Ego is called "Ahankara" in sanskrit. It is feeling of "Iness". Feeling of seperation from the existence. Many spiritual teachings stress on dropping the ego, surrendering the ego etc. Ego is like a shadow. Absence of light. A product of ignorance. No matter how hard you try, you can not catch the shadow let alone dropping it. Only way is to investigate the nature of ego. The moment you do that ego disappears - never to be
seen.
