We have two purposes in life. The outer purpose and the inner purpose. We interact with the world to fulfil our outer purpose while we turn inwards for fulfilling our inner purpose. Our inner purpose is more important than the outer purpose.
Inner Purpose
We seek long lasting Love, Peace, Happiness, Wisdom through our inner purpose. This seeking is called Seeking Self Realization.

Outer Purpose
While on the other hand, we try to seek happiness through job, relationship, entertainment, company and other outward activitities. In reality we are trying fulfil our inner purpose through outward activities.
Materialism and Spirituality
Trying to fulfil our inner purpose through outward activity is called materialism. On the other hand trying to fulfil the inner purpose through
searching for the source - God within is called spirituality.
These two conflicting directions can be harmonized by the Vedic Dictum
which summerizes the purpose of life.
"Atmano Mokshartham, Loka Hitaya Cha". We strive to find our inner Source (Atman/God) while working towards welfare of the Universe.
